Conservation in Sri Lanka
Considered by Marco Polo to be the finest island of its size in all the world, Sri Lanka, the "Teardrop of India", the "Pearl of the Orient", has long been an irresistible destination for travellers. This strikingly beautiful landscape has its own unique charm, balancing jungle with hillside tea plantations and long sandy beaches dotted with palm trees. Sri Lanka's distinctly Buddhist culture also shows elements of contact with the British, Dutch and Portuguese colonial forces.
From the ruins of the ancient Buddhist capital of Anuradhapura to the Dutch fort at Galle, the island is steeped in the legacies of it rich history. In contrast the island's capital, Colombo, is a thriving and modern city with plenty of entertainment options and good nightlife. Sri Lanka is an island where colour abounds everywhere, in the bright festival decorations, in the scenery, and even in the food. Yet it is undoubtedly the famous warmth and hospitality of the Sri Lankan people which will leave its indelible mark on the visitor.
