Tonga Teaching in Tonga Healthcare and medicine in Tonga This small nation nestled in the Western Pacific Ocean is close to Fiji and Samoa and only an hour and a half by plane from New Zealand. It is composed of 173 stunning islands, which cover a distance of over 800 miles from north to south. Tonga is one of the first places in the World to see the sunrise every day and as a result it is often referred to as the “land where time begins”. Tonga’s main island, Tongatapu (or ‘sacred south’), is the first of the islands that you will encounter, and is where Nuku’alofa, the Kingdom’s capital is situated. Although a capital in name, Naku’alofa is unlike any other capital city you will have visited before. It’s small and friendly, with the tallest building only 3 stories high! Despite its size, you will find most things that you need there: banks, supermarkets, historical buildings and a number of fine drinking spots! This is a conservative and religious society where you are guaranteed a warm welcome. We recommend that you spend at least some of your weekends here exploring the idyllic beaches that characterize the various islands. From here you can enjoy some of the superb watersports and activities that the country has to offer, including snorkeling, whale watching, hiking, scuba diving and even swimming with Humpback whales!
