Moved by the country’s great beauty, Winston Churchill described Uganda as the ‘Pearl of Africa’ during his visit in 1907. This beauty strikes travellers to the country to this day.

The Ugandan countryside is an incredibly lush and green tropical landscape. Visitors to this country are rewarded with amazing birdlife and wild animals – including the ‘Big Five’ and the endangered mountain gorillas, (half of the world’s population of these magnificent creatures resides within this country). Uganda’s alluring physical features include huge lakes, grand mountain ranges such as the snow-capped Rwenzori Mountains, or ‘Mountains of the Moon’ in the southwest, and impenetrable forests and jungle wilderness. It’s a truly breathtaking country.

The people are incredibly friendly and are genuinely happy to help. You cannot help but be affected by the warmth of this community to the point that people who spend time here often do not want to leave.

Gap jobs are currently based in Jinja district with Jinja town itself serving as the main centre of Madventurer activities in this area. Jinja is a sleepy little town, increasingly popular with travellers. The town itself is about an hour and a half’s drive from Kampala, located on the banks of Lake Victoria and at the source of the River Nile that has captivated explorers and travellers for centuries. The area is incredibly green and fertile, starkly contrasting with the rich red earth and the deep blue equatorial skies.

The introduction of volunteers and external support and assistance in Uganda provides a fresh mind and pair of hands to positively contribute towards the work in what are under-funded and overstretched facilities.

Weekend on the Nile
Being based so near to the Nile offers the opportunity to challenge yourself to the mighty white water rapids. The first few rapids are low grade (1, 2) and give volunteers a growing sense of confidence. As the river meanders through beautiful scenery, the rafts are guided into the mighty challenges of the best 'grade 5' rapids on the Nile. Twelve major rapids are rafted plus lots of lower graded runs to maximize the fun! The day finishes with the best BBQ in Africa on the banks of the conquered Nile.
