Gap Jobs is currently based in the Volta Regional Capital, Ho, a fantastic base from which to explore this lush and mountainous region, home to the countryís tallest waterfall and highest peak. Ho is a relatively large town, being the capital of the Volta Region, and has a large market, tro-tro and bus station, a good internet cafÈ, two hotels with swimming pools that are open to daily visitors, and a number of chop bars (local ërestaurantsí), spot bars (to buy a cold soft drinks or beers), small shops and stalls that sell all the necessary essentials.
One of the problems facing the Health Care System in Ghana is the migration of trained doctors. There are currently more Ghanaian doctors practicing in Europe and North America than in Ghana itself. The government has attempted to address this problem with measures such as increasing the internship from 1 to 2 years for newly trained doctors, however low salaries and limited opportunities for professional training and career development mean that the majority of trained professionals still prefer to practice abroad.
Our Gap Jobs programme is based at the Volta Regional Hospital in Ho. The hospital is the main provider of curative tertiary care in the region, and employs approx. 15 doctors and 80 nurses. It has all of the departments you would expect to find in a hospital in the UK including A+E, Paediatrics, Physiotherapy, Maternity and Orthopaedics.
This is a great opportunity to visit and shadow medics at work in hospital and learn about medicine in a country likely to be very different from your own. You will be able to assist or shadow the doctors and nurses in a chosen department, depending on your experience and level of training. There is also the opportunity to move between departments, and visit rural clinics for a more varied placement.
Follow your placement with an incredible adventure to Timbuktu
