Our Gap Jobs programme is based in the city of Cuzco. Located 3400m above sea level in the Andes mountains, Cuzco was once the centre of the great Inca Empire and is home to some 300,000 people, but the narrow cobbled streets and local craft markets still retain all of their traditional charm, and llamas wander past the Internet cafes and bars.

Your medical placement will be based in Cuzco’s Regional Hospital. This hospital is one of the bases for the ‘Gorgas’ Medicine Instruction Course, which is organised by Alabama University and specialises in tropical medicine and infectology.

Your placement will include this course, which is designed for both pre and post grade international medical students, and can be tailored according to level and interest.

The course includes the following:
  • 3 weeks hospital practice, during which, you will have the opportunity to shadow or assist doctors and nurses in a variety of departments depending on experience and areas of interest. Your working hours will be 8-1pm, Monday to Friday.
  • 1 weeks hospital practice in jungle location, focusing on tropical medicine
  • Community medicine: Each Saturday you will accompany doctors and nurses from the hospital to villages, and towns in rural locations to assist in an outreach programme, delivering medical assistance and health education to those who are too remote or cannot afford to travel to Cuzco for treatment.

In addition to this work experience you will attend medical theory classes 3 afternoons per week, and will have the guidance of a tutor to assist you with any queries you may have. The duration of the course is four weeks, following which you will receive certification of course completion from the hospital and University and will have the opportunity to continue assisting in the programme.

At the weekends, you don’t have to go far from Cuzco to find yourself in villages where little has changed in the last hundred years. People in traditional Peruvian dress still farm the fields with ox-drawn ploughs and donkeys are the main rural transport.

Follow your placement with an awe-inspiring adventure in the Andes
