Teaching in Tonga
Tonga’s health placements are based on the country’s gorgeous main island, Tongatapu. We are currently working at the Vailoa hospital, in the Tongan capital Nuku’alofa.
As a small nation with an overstretched free national health system, Tonga welcomes outside help and funding. Volunteers always receive a warm welcome, and you will find that the local people really appreciate your efforts. Unfortunately, however, the hospital simply doesn’t have the resources to take inexperienced students. We therefore restrict all Gap Jobs health placements to experienced health care professionals, or people in their 3rd year of a medical related degree.
Your role: We will create a rewarding and hands-on placement that is suited to both your experience and any areas of particular interest or expertise. When you sign up we will ask you about your qualifications and experience, to ensure we arrange a suitable placement. On arrival in Tonga we will arrange a meeting with senior staff at the hospital, so you can discuss your aims and how your skills can be used to best effect in the hospital.
Weekends in Tonga are free to enjoy at your leisure. Although you are welcome to stay in the Madventurer house, we suggest that you explore the unspoilt beaches and gorgeous landscapes that the various islands have to offer. The more active venturers can hike up active volcanoes, or make the most of the fantastic diving opportunities.
