Journalism in Ghana Gap Jobs’ journalism placements are based in the bustling town of Ho, capital of the stunning Volta Region. Home to the world’s largest man-made, this area is one of outstanding natural beauty. It’s also reputed to be home to the friendliest people on the continent, so you are guaranteed a warm welcome! In Ho there is plenty to do and facilities include a large market, tro-tro and bus station, a good internet café, two hotels with swimming pools that are open to daily visitors, and a number of chop bars (local ‘restaurants’), spot bars (to buy a cold soft drinks or beers), small shops and stalls that sell all the necessary essentials. If you feel like taking a long weekend break form your placement, the Ghanaian coast is within reach, offering a wonderful opportunity to relax, explore and learn more about the country’s fascinating slave past The journalism placements are currently being run in conjunction with the Ghana New Agency. This agency has journalists and freelance reporters working throughout the region, researching and writing news stories. These articles are collected and edited in the office in Ho, and are then sent out to national newspapers, tv and radio stations. During your placement you should be able to gain a unique insight into how the press works in this region, and the restrictions it faces. You will be able to work with the local journalists, and for budding or experienced writers, there may be the opportunity to write a story for the wire yourself! Although these placements are based at the office in Ho, you may find yourself travelling throughout the whole Volta region. The journalists travel throughout the area in search of stories and interviews, and you may have the opportunity to accompany them, seeing more of rural and urban Ghana in the process. This really is a fantastic learning opportunity especially for those with a sense of adventure! See also:
