Health, Care & Medicine in Peru
Our Gap Jobs programme is based in the city of Cuzco. Located 3400m above sea level in the Andes mountains, Cuzco was once the centre of the great Inca Empire and is home to some 300,000 people, but the narrow cobbled streets and local craft markets still retain all of their traditional charm, and llamas wander past the Internet cafes and bars.
The Peruvian Education System faces many problems, including a lack of funds to provide adequate facilities for schools and poor attendance rates. This can be due to children having outside commitments such as helping in the fields or providing care for younger siblings while their parents work.
Your teaching placement will be in either a local state school or childrens home in Cuzco, depending on the date of your placement and your preference.
Knowledge of the English language is desirable to many Peruvians, particularly in Cuzco, where a thriving tourist market, can provide many opportunities for English speaking locals. This will be the main subject of your lessons, although there is also the opportunity to teach other subjects including geography, maths and art.
There is plenty to do at the weekends and you don’t have to go far from Cuzco to find yourself in villages where little has changed in the last hundred years. People in traditional Peruvian dress still farm the fields with ox-drawn ploughs and donkeys are the main rural transport.
Please Note: You will need to speak Spanish to enjoy our placements in Peru. For those with little or no knowledge of the language, we can arrange a week’s intensive tuition prior to your placement in Cusco. For further details please contact us on 0845 1211996.
