Teaching in Sri Lanka Sri Lanka Since independence from British colonial rule, Sri Lankans have been keen to re-establish their own national identity, in particular through their language. As a result, Singhalese and Tamil are the two official languages of the country, rather than English. Indeed, in the past, English was seen by many as the language of high society and ordinary folk speaking it were often frowned upon. The standard of English - at least away from tourist areas and the educated elite - is therefore generally low. Despite this admirable pride in their own culture and language, Sri Lankans today recognise that to achieve success in a world increasingly dominated by IT, tourism and global trade, a good command of English is an enormous advantage. English-speaking volunteers are therefore welcomed to assist with teaching and practicing English, especially in the less well-off schools that can only afford limited staff and resources. The majority of schools with whom we work are a short bus ride from the town of Kandy, as it is in these slightly more rural areas that there is a greater demand for volunteers. As well as English, there is a great deal of scope for teaching other subjects for volunteers with particular skills and interests. Your Crew Leader will have a good knowledge of the needs in different schools, and emphasis is placed on volunteers finding the role that suits them best within the school.
