Healthcare in Tonga
Our Gap Jobs Teaching program is based in Nukuíalofa the capital of Tonga. This is a very laid back, friendly city, situated on the north coast of the main island, Tongatapu. A small but very welcoming city, Nukuíalofa has a number of shops, internet cafes, a gym, and a number of sporting facilities, restaurants and bars.
We have worked with a number of schools in Nukuíalofa, both primary and secondary. A typical school day will run from 9 am to 3 pm very much similar to schools in the UK where you will be given the opportunity to work as a classroom assistant or even run the classes in some cases.
Many Tongan schools actually rely on volunteers to staff some of their classrooms due to their lack of funding. The injection of fresh ideas and enthusiasm that our volunteers can bring is often welcomed in schools where circumstances can be difficult. The positive impact of having a volunteer from overseas can help make the school children feel appreciated and the insight into foreign culture and attitudes can be very exciting for them.
Subjects offered are similar to those in our own curriculum, and the topics you teach will be based around your own interests. English is one the most important subject that schools ask for our help with but there are lots of opportunities to teach and assist with nearly every other subject depending on your own ability, skills and confidence. There may also be opportunities to get involved in things like arts and crafts, music and sports along with a number of other extra curricular activities.
